5 Important Tips How To Use Windows 8

I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad for my colleague the other day and it came with the new pre-installed Windows 8 of course, but the box did not include any installation booklet or DVD and even during the setup sequence there was no proper on-screen tutorial... etc. Wow, I thought... Microsoft must have nailed this one and they must be confident in heaving created a very easy to use software. They had promised a lot after all in making Windows 8 an intuitive operating system that worked especially well on tablets and devices with a touchscreen.

Well, I must admit, that I freaked out www.mobile-future.com.au/2013/05/5-important-tips-how-to-useat first when I realised there was no START button on the lower left hand corner any more, so the first thing I did was to google for a program that would re-install it. There are a lot of software hacks out there, but after testing a few I would recommend against using them, because interestingly enough after then dealing with Windows 8 for a few hours, I started to like it and once you figure out the basics of the new system, it is pretty easy to use. So here they are:

1. Active corners of the screen: It is very important to know that all corners of the screen are sensitive menu areas to navigate your Windows 8. Just move your mouse into each corner and see what happens, e.g. on the lower left you get back to the desktop, on the upper left you can see your open windows and on the right hand side you can find the search, settings, etc....
2. How to get to your settings, WiFi, etc.: The easiest and quickest way to get to your settings is to move the mouse to the right corner which brings out the menu with the search field on top. Use this search field heavily to really get to anything you need. Just make sure you also pre-select the most appropriate option below the search box, e.g. "settings". This will probably become your most important feature to navigate between the various features of the operating system. 
   
3. Old desktop view: There should be a tile on your start screen labelled "Desktop". This one will bring you back onto the "old" desktop which gave me great relieve, because I could use e.g. my Windows Explorer for file management purposes as I did before.
4. Favourites on your start screen: The default has many Microsoft products on your start screen. You can easily get rid of them and exchange them with your favourite programs by simply clicking on to them with the right mouse. Do the same over the background of the start screen and you get to all your programs to choose from.
5. Apps: Hey, Windows 8 now has a proper integration with third-party apps. You will find them by also clicking on the right mouse part while hovering your mouse over the start screen background and you will see "all apps" on the lower right.
